Rose E. (Aughenbaugh) Smeal Obituary

Rozella Aughenbaugh Smeal, lovingly known as “Nana” to her grandchildren, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 22, 2025, at DuBois Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on January 25, 1944, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Raymond James I. and Florence (Shubert) Aughenbaugh.

Rose’s greatest love was her faith. She loved the Lord and Jesus Christ more than anything and lived her life as a devoted servant to Him. A deeply spiritual woman, she dedicated herself to helping her family, her community, and anyone God placed in her path. She was a faithful member of the Clearfield Alliance Church, where her love for God and people was evident through her service and example.

She was a 1962 graduate of Clearfield High School and later worked at Moshannon Valley Christian Academy, where her commitment to Christian values and service reflected the life she lived every day. Rose was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. She served not only as an educator, but as a mentor to countless children. Rose touched many lives as a mother figure and strong influence on her students, offering guidance, encouragement, and love that extended far beyond the classroom.

After retiring from the Christian school, Rose continued her calling to nurture and care for others by becoming a Nanny, helping raise three wonderful children who brought her immense pride and joy. Her gentle spirit, patience, and unwavering devotion were evident in every role she fulfilled.

Family was at the heart of everything Rose did. She shared a very special bond with her daughter, Kathy Howe, and son-in-law, Larry Howe, who lovingly cared for her during her final years. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was constant and unconditional.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Aughenbaugh; sister-in-law Becky Aughenbaugh;  her daughters, Susan Thoman and husband Lee, Kathy Howe and husband Larry, and April Kelly and her husband Shawn ; her grandchildren, Dustin Clark, Dillon Clark and wife Kyley, Cierra Hibshman and husband Kody, Jordan Cole and husband Tyler, Cody Beish and Miranda Beish; seven Great-grandchildren, Aleigha, Camden, Lilyana, Bentley, Greyson, Delilah and Madelyn and others she cherished deeply.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Al Smeal; daughter, Sherry Smeal; her brothers, Raymond James Aughenbaugh II, Edward Aughenbaugh, Frederick Aughenbaugh, Ernie Aughenbaugh; who now joyfully welcome her home in Heaven.

Rose’s life was a testament to faith, love, and service. Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she is rejoicing in eternal peace with her Lord.

Family and friends will be received Monday December 29,2025 at the Clearfield Alliance Church from 11 am until the noon funeral service officiated by Rev. Terry Brown and Rev. Timothy Miller.

Interment will be in the Baughman Cemetery.
