Melvin Joseph Archer, 87, of Brisbin, passed away Monday February 26,2024 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College surrounded by his family.
Born October 30, 1936 in Sterling, rural Houtzdale, he was the son of the late Joseph and Arveda (Truax) Lobb Archer.
Melvin was a 1954 graduate of Houtzdale Woodward Brisbin High School and a member of the Brisbin Baptist Church. He served in the United State Army from 1961 to 1962.
During his lifetime he was employed by C & Z Chevrolet, Stott Coal Company from 1976 to 1996 as a bookkeeper, manager of Clearfield True Value, and office personal at Lansberry Trucking until his retirement.
His passion was serving the Houtzdale Fire Company where he was a lifetime member. He served as No1 Fire Police Captain, Financial Secretary and Treasurer. In 2012 he was recognized for his service and awarded the Houtzdale Day's Citizen of the Year Award.
On August 6, 1960, he married Carol (Irwin) Archer, who preceded him in death on March 8, 1995.
Melvin is survived by two daughters; Colleen (John) Vingless of Houtzdale, Janea Archer of Brisbin, two granddaughters; Mindy (Erik) Dick of Coalport, Brittany Archer of Brisbin and a great grandson Brandon Dick of Coalport.
Also surviving is a former son-in-law Bill Albright of Houtzdale and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and a sister Janet Bloom.
Family and friends will be received at the Birger A Freeberg Funeral Home Inc, Houtzdale on Thursday February 29, 2024 from 2 to 8pm and Friday from 9 to 11am.
Funeral Service will be held Friday March 1, 2024 at the Birger A Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale, at 11:00 am with Rev Robert Ford officiating.
The Houtzdale Fire Company will hold a memorial service Thursday at 7pm at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.
