Lawrence Dugan Obituary

 

Lawrence "Larry" Dugan, 81, of Houtzdale, passed away Saturday October 25, 2025.

Born March 11, 1944 in Morann, he was a son of the late Gertrude B. (Magensky) Dugan and Haney P. Dugan.

Larry was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale and Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Valley Council #10376.

He was also a member of Houtzdale Loyal Order of Moose #327, Houtzdale American Legion Post #591, Morann Citizens Club, Smithmill Veterans of Foreign War Post #6321, Modern Woodsman of America and PSEA.

Larry was a 1962 graduate of the Madera Center of the Moshannon Valley Joint School District, where he lettered in Baseball, Football, and Wrestling, and due to his athletic abilities, he was offered scholarships to play football at several universities. He was scouted by some professional baseball teams as a pitcher.

He was a 1981 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University: the first of 3 consecutive generations of Penn State Alumni.  

Larry served with the United States Army from 1965 to 1971 and was the second of four generations of the Dugan family to serve in the United States military.

During his years of employment, he worked as a union carpenter and retired from the Philipsburg-Osceola School District, where he was employed as an Industrial Arts teacher.

He was an avid sports fan and faithfully followed Penn State Football, Steelers, New England Patriots, and the Pirates.

Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and was an avid reader.  He especially enjoyed making woodcraft items for his grandchildren.

He is survived by Sandra Dugan at home, two sons, Lawrence "Larry" (Tracie) Dugan of Mechanicsburg and Timothy "Tim" Dugan of Smithfield, along with four grandchildren, Alexander L. (Genevieve) Dugan, Kaitlyn M. (Joshua) Myers, Kyra (Dominic) Dugan-Cervone, and Kiley Dugan.

Also surviving are three brothers, Matthew, Mark (Vicki), Michael (Connie) Dugan and four sisters, Kathleen Dugan, Linda (Lawrence) Kitko, Patricia (Gary) Barber, and Teresa Dugan.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Janeen, and brothers, Paul, John, and Daniel.

Family and Friends will be received Wednesday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc, Houtzdale from 2-4pm and 6-8pm and Thursday from 9-10:30am.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday October 30, 2025 at 11am at Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale with Father Zab Amar as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the American Legion Cemetery, Brisbin with graveside military honors accorded by the Houtzdale American Legion and Smithmill Veterans of Foreign War joint honor guard.

The Houtzdale Loyal Order of Moose will hold a memorial service at 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations made be made in Larry's memory to St Jude Research Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn. 38105.
