Edward L. Smeal, 87, of Philipsburg and formerly of Houtzdale, passed away Saturday June 11, 2022 in Clearfield, PA. Born on September 10, 1934 in West Decatur, he was a son of the late Roland “Dip” & Bertha Mae (Fleck) Smeal.
Ed served in the Air Force and was stationed at Greenham Common in the United Kingdom. In his younger days he was active with the Moshannon Valley Forest Fire Association and served as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 43, having also been a member of the Order of the Arrow. After 31 years, Ed retired from Corning Asahi, State College in 1997.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Ed loved socializing with family and friends, going out to eat, watching television and telling stories.
On April 19, 1969 he married Anna Mae (Huber) Smeal of Houtzdale, who preceded him in death on January 4, 2022. Ed is survived by his sister, Linda Pelton of Morrisdale; two sons, Edward A. Smeal of Willow Grove and Robert L. Smeal of Houtzdale; and five grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, four brothers Oliver “Pete”, Robert “Bobby”, Roy “Jim” and George “Dick”, and three sisters Margaret Smeal, Eleanor “Jane” Bryan, and Betty M. Fry.
A funeral service will be held at the Birger A Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale, on Thursday June 16, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Ford presiding. Ed will be laid to rest beside his wife in the American Legion Cemetery, Brisbin.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Military honors will be accorded by the Houtzdale American Legion and Janesville VFW joint honor guard preceding the 6:00 a.m. service at the funeral home.
