Edmond George Obituary

Edmond Michael George, 91, of Houtzdale died peacefully with his family by his side on January 29, 2024 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Born September 12, 1932 in Houtzdale, he was the son of the late Jacob and Emily (Sahlaney) George. On October 24, 1957, he married Joanne Colose in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg.

He is survived by two daughters; Emily Shylock of Houtzdale, Carolyn Listach and her husband Patrick of Spring, Texas, and a son David George of Madera. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Joseph Shylock and his wife Angela, Joanna Shylock, Catrina Soto, Jacob Soto and his wife Hannah, and Emilie George; and three great-grandchildren Jacob, Liam, and Andrew Shylock. Also surviving him is brother Dr. William George and his wife Donna of Harvey, Louisiana, sister-in-law Edna Mae George of Houtzdale, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by beloved wife Joanne George, sisters Faye Summers and Vivian George, a brother the Honorable Camille “Bud” George and a son-in-law Joseph A. Shylock.

Edmond graduated Houtzdale-Woodward High School in 1950. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955. After World War II, Edmond’s father started J. George’s Gas Station. In 1959, Edmond, along with his father and brothers, transformed the family business into Jacob George Ford Sales, Inc., where he remained active in the business until his last days. He was also a pillar of his community throughout his career, serving as a mayor of Houtzdale, and as a board member for the following businesses and organizations: Mid-State Bank, Houtzdale Municipal Authority, Moshannon Valley School District, and Philipsburg State General Hospital.

Fondly known as “Ubby” by family and friends, you could always count on him to be at the Ford dealership on Monday through Saturday where he displayed untiring work ethic; however, Sundays were reserved for his world class shopping trips where he was seemingly able to discover great bargains for virtually anything. After all, Ubby’s famous motto was: “We don’t pay retail.” The only thing Ubby loved more than his Sunday shopping trips was sharing his findings with his loved ones.

Ubby was kind and enjoyed sharing life’s blessings with not only his family but others as well.  He treated friends as family and regularly stopped by friends’ homes for a whiskey.

During Ubby’s life, he always enjoyed dancing with his wife Joanne. Ubby now leaves us to join Joanne on the eternal dance floor.

Family and friends will be received Friday February 2, 2024 at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale from 1pn until 4 pm and 6 pm until 8 pm. and Saturday from 9 am until 10 am.
